Splash is at the forefront of a growing movement to ensure that children in urban poverty have the resources they need to thrive and realise their full potential. They design water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH), and menstrual health solutions alongside governments within some of the world’s biggest, low resource cities. Their coverage is city-wide, with an approach of targeting 100% of public schools with their WASH solutions.

Splash’s approach is uniquely targeted towards the urban poor and its solutions are designed and built to last in dense and highly-populated environments. Splash are committed to building strong local organisations that work directly with institutions and governments to ensure their sustainable ownership and funding for long-term provision of WASH services.

In their current initiative, Project WISE, Splash’s goal is to reach every school in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Kolkata, India, with their WASH services. The program focus is to benefit one million children by 2023 through positive changes in infrastructure, behaviour change programs, and strengthened menstrual health services. Since 2007, Splash has undertaken 2,148 projects in schools and public institutions across eight countries, reaching 794,570 people, of whom 611,014 are children.

While completion of the work in the two target cities is the short-term goal, Splash’s longer-range ambition is to establish clear roadmaps for success for cities beyond Addis Ababa and Kolkata. Proving a cost-efficient and durable program of this size, being co-funded and co-implemented with government and locally overseen, with clear health impacts is unprecedented. Splash looks to work with governments and INGOs to design and advise on similarly sized WASH projects post Project WISE. Successfully implementing this project in two disparate contexts in South Asia and East Africa will provide clear evidence and learnings for replication in similarly sized, low-resource cities.

FY2021 Impact Milestones

Splash aims to reach the following impact milestones over the course of Thankyou’s grant period (15 months). Here’s how they went:

Ensure 180,000 kids in Kolkata, India and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia receive comprehensive WASH services.
Ensure 180,000 kids in Kolkata, India and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia receive comprehensive WASH services.222,663 beneficiaries received comprehensive WASH services during the grant period through SPLASH initiatives. The goal was altered from 180,000 beneficiaries to 220,751 beneficiaries due to increased school populations from the time of the last citywide survey.
Install 195 water ultrafiltration systems at schools in Kolkata, India and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Splash installed 215 ultrafiltration systems at schools in Kolkata, India and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Splash had changed the initial target from 195 ultrafiltration systems to 227 ultrafiltration systems due to increased sites and school populations.
Install 2,460 drinking water and handwashing stations at schools in Kolkata, India and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Splash installed 1,181 drinking water stations and 1,149 handwashing stations. The targets for both drinking water station and handwashing station installation were increased to 1,304 from the original target was 1,230 drinking water stations. The target was increased due to increased school populations and is still based on ratios and not on technical walkthrough data and realities at the school due to COVID-19, resulting in the lower numbers of stations installed than targeted.
Install 2,990,000 litres of new and rehabilitated water storage at schools in Kolkata, India and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Splash successfully installed 3,624,750 litres of new and rehabilitated water storage at schools in Kolkata, India and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The original target was 2,990,000 litres, and was increased to 4,429,000 litres due to increased school populations and is still based on ratios and not on technical walkthrough data and realities at the school due to COVID-19, resulting in the lower numbers of stations installed than targeted for.
Ensure 220 school sites in Kolkata, India and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia have teachers and students trained to promote school-based WASH activities.
Splash trained teachers and students at 197 sites or 238 schools. The original site target of 220 was reduced to 197 due to COVID-19 and increased school populations.
